This express tour of Catania won’t take you to the highest peaks of the mountain but it’s still a great day out if you’re short on time. You’ll still get to trek on Europe’s most active volcano and you’ll see the Silvestri craters!
An incredible half day tour from Catania, you’ll visit Europe’s most active volcano and take a trek at almost 2,000 meters above sea level. See the Silvestri craters and visit a lava cave before returning to the Rifugio Sapienza to taste some local products
This express tour of Mount Etna means that you still get the benefit of seeing what this magnificent natural wonder has to offer even if you don’t have a whole day to set aside. Take a comfortable minivan from the historic center of Catania and watch the landscape change as you drive up to a height of 1,900 meters above sea level. It’s here that you’ll leave your minivan behind and meet your guide, who will take you on a hike to the Silvestri craters.
The Silvestri Craters were formed in 1892 and make for one of the easiest and most accessible hikes from the Rifugio Sapienza. Sure, you can see more from Valle del Bove but there isn’t the time to do that on an express tour. These craters are inactive so there is no danger for guests - and you can even rent hiking shoes and poles to make your hike more comfortable. After some time at the craters, you’ll then visit a lava cave should the conditions be safe. Flashlights and helmets are provided for safety.
The short but sweet tour isn’t over there. Leave the lava cave and head back to the Rifugio Sapienza, where you’ll sample a selection of fine Sicilian products. Then, you’ll get back on board your minivan to make the return journey to Catania. The Etna Express tour is available both at sunrise and sunset, so you can make the most of a special atmosphere.
