An unforgettable day trip from Catania will see you conquer Europe’s highest active volcano with a trek, cable car ride and a delicious lunch.
For many who visit Sicily, trekking on Mount Etna is their number one wish. And this tour makes that possible. You’ll see a landscape you’re unlikely to have ever seen before which is constantly changing due to the volcano still being active!
You’ll leave Catania by comfortable minivan with an expert driver and guide. Notice the landscape change as you continue to get higher, seeing typical Etna villages from your vehicle. Arrive at the Rifugio La Sapienza at 1,910 meters and take a cable car 600 meters up to the start of your trek.
When you get off the cable car, you may notice that the land resembles what you imagine it might be on the moon. You’ll be 2,500 meters, but there’s still a way to go. As you climb, you’ll pass the crater born of the 2001 Etna eruption, which was one of the most powerful volcanic eruptions this century. But the best is yet to come - the Valle del Bove stands at 2,750 meters on a volcanic depression and it’s here that we’ll stop to take in the views and snap some photographs. You can see all the way along the coast from Taormina to Syracuse - there’s nowhere like it!
After the Valle Del Bove, you’ll get to see some of the summit craters which are constantly emitting gasses and water vapors. Another hour of trekking will bring you to a lava cave - another unforgettable experience. Then, the group will head back down to the Rifugio La Sapienza. The trek will undoubtedly have worked up an appetite, so you’ll be pleased to know that a Sicilian lunch and tastings of typical products await you.
