The excellent result of various foreign influences and denominations that have followed one another over the centuries. To begin your walking tour, you will walk through the characteristic streets of the old town, admiring some of the architectural masterpieces that make this city unique such as the Cathedral, Palazzo dei Normanni, the Palatine Chapel and the Teatro Massimo. You will be accompanied throughout the tour by an experienced local guide who will tell you the legends and folk stories of each point of interest. Prepare to be enchanted by the beauty of the palaces and monuments. Don't miss the opportunity to stop and take some photos to share with friends and family when you return home. To encourage an intimate and informal atmosphere, the tour is planned for a small number of travelers. This way, you can really enjoy the voice and experience of your tour guide. The city, with its historic buildings, neighborhood markets, charming sights and local dishes will leave an indelible mark on your memory.
Strolling through the streets and alleys of the center, you will have the opportunity to visit Palermo's best fried-food shops, street vendors and taverns. Your route will include five splendid taste stops. At each stop you will sample a traditional local street food. You will taste the world-famous arancine. These are a heart of rice stuffed with meat sauce, peas, caciocavallo cheese or ham and then breaded in breadcrumbs and fried. Tasty, rich in flavor and history, they will delight you and leave you wanting more. You will then enjoy a classic Sicilian granita: very different from the ones you are used to! And for that sweet treat that never fails, you will taste cannoli. The essence of Sicily enclosed in a crispy wafer and a ricotta cream. Sicilian cannoli are a source of pride for this wonderful island and are among the most loved sweets in the world. Often garnished with pistachio grains, chocolate chips or candied fruit, they are sold in the streets and alleys. The local gastronomic goodness is not yet over. In fact, you will continue the tour by making two more surprise culinary stops. Your knowledgeable and engaging guide will reveal the secrets, different versions and legends surrounding these foods that vary from province to province and sometimes from family to family.
To experience Palermo like a true local, all you have to do is visit one of its historic food markets. Let yourself be absorbed by the constant chatter as you sample some extraordinary street food. The Palermo market is a true institution in the city and a place where local gastronomic tradition is kept alive by mixing it with innovation. A legacy of the period of Arab domination of the island, the market is more like a suq because it is not only a place of commerce, but also of relationship, communication and exchange and is visited daily by hundreds of people. You cannot fail to stroll through the market during your stay in Palermo; this is the best way to get in touch with the deep soul of this colorful, multi-ethnic and constantly evolving city.
