Get up close to Renaissance masterpieces in this often-overlooked landmark. The Bargello is home to The National Renaissance Statue Museum. Situated in one of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in Florence, the structure dates back to 1255. It has played a fundamental role in some of the most important events in Florentine civic life. Initially the headquarters of the city’s rulers and later of the Magistrates, the Bargello changed roles again in the 16th century to become host to the city’s police. Throughout the 18th century it functioned as a prison. Inside the Bargello, discover the beautiful works of Michelangelo, Cellini, Giambologna and Donatello’s beautiful David sculpture.
