It was young Caterina de’ Medici, bride to be of the future King of France, who started the history of ice cream, and many other dishes, by taking her crew of talented Tuscan cooks and visionary pastry chefs to France when she got married. Among these was Ruggero, known as “the ice cream wizard”. He invented the first ice-cream, then called “sugary-perfumed-icy-water”, which soon became the delicacy most desired by Europe’s nobility. Whatever its origins, the history of gelato is tightly linked to Florence and its traditional heritage, and the art of making it has only grown with time, with many artisan “gelaterias” spread all over town, in hidden corners and quaint small streets. Explore the ancient town, discover the secrets that lie behind the production of ice cream, and taste the most mouth-watering ones in town!
Led by our expert local gelato-loving guide you will visit 4 different traditional gelato shops in the Florence historical center, and in each taste different flavors.
