Step off the beaten path and enjoy an adventurous journey into Tuscany’s heart and soul! Our signature Lucca & Marble Experience allows you to explore charming Lucca, one of Tuscany’s jewel towns, and the Apuan Alps, and take an insider’s view of the area’s thriving traditional heritage visiting a working sawmill and a marble quarry in the mountains. And all with the privilege of private transportation and private guide assistance throughout the day. Savor the ride and the views traveling to Lucca, a town which appears like a vision, encased as it is by imposing Renaissance walls, famous worldwide as birthplace of the great composer Giacomo Puccini. Meet your private dedicated English-speaking guide and set off on a memorable walking visit of this exquisite town. Unveil its secrets, learn all about its eventful centuries-old history and admire the characteristic vibrant colors: the soft red of the rooftops and brick walls, shiny white marble of palaces and churches, and resplendent green of the many sumptuous private gardens, make Lucca an icon of the Italian flag!
Led by your guide you will discover all major sights and landmarks among which Piazza San Michele in Foro, with its gorgeous church, Piazza Napoleone, Palazzo Ducale, the lovely Teatro del Giglio and the Cathedral of San Martino, where the wooden crucifix known as Volto Santo (the “Holy Face”) and famous sarcophagus by Jacopo della Quercia are housed. Wander down bewitching medieval streets to the ever-fascinating elliptical Piazza Anfiteatro, see the house where Puccini was born and discover “le Mura” Lucca’s most extraordinary feature: massive, perfectly preserved, 40-meter-high city walls, which extend over 4 kilometers! Today the whole of the ancient walls is a park and pedestrian promenade. Stroll through the well-groomed lawns lined by century-old trees and enjoy awe-inspiring views of the town below. Relish some time at leisure to appreciate Lucca’s peaceful atmosphere and relish delicious local specialties at a restaurant/trattoria or café of your choice.
After lunch time for some adventure! Set off towards Carrara for a memorable visit to the Apuan Alps, an extraordinary ring of marble peaks which physically separate two very different “worlds”: the north and the Mediterranean. Admire extraordinary views, white cascades of marble snaking along the mountainside and the deep blue gleaming sea below, while driving up towards the world-famous Carrara marble quarries, the very ones Michelangelo got the marble for his masterpieces from. Meet your local dedicated private guide along the way and enjoy the opportunity of discovering the area’s marble history and traditions in authentic working workshops and quarries. Carefully planned to offer real insight on the marvelous realm of marble your visit will include exploring a traditional sawmill, where you will learn all about the machinery and tools used to transform marble blocks into finished goods (and works of art!), a marble pit and marble carving workshop for an insider’s view on the different ways marble is extracted and processed, and a fascinating walk through the marble basins and ancient tunnels of the quarry railway.
